Overview
Red deer (Cervus elaphus), introduced to New Zealand in the late 19th century, are the most prevalent deer species across the country. Males, known as stags, and females, referred to as hinds, thrive in various landscapes. A New Zealand red stag weighs between 200 and 400 pounds and boasts antlers that make for an iconic trophy.
Hunting Methods
The primary technique for pursuing red deer, like most other big game in New Zealand, is spot-and-stalk. Hunters may find themselves navigating dense forests, or traversing open high-country ridges, scanning valleys to evaluate potential trophy animals. Shot distances can range from 20 to 400 yards, depending on the terrain and hunting location.
Hunting Season
Hunting for red deer is best from mid-February through to July while the stags maintain their antlers. The prime period being March and April during the rut, when stags emit a distinctive roar to challenge rivals.
For those focused on harvesting meat, hunts can be arranged year-round.
